AGL penalty notices 2023
AGL Sales Pty Ltd (AGL) has paid $73,968 in penalties after we issued two penalty notices on 24 August 2023. We issued the penalties to AGL for allegedly breaching rules that protect Victorians from being wrongfully disconnected.
One penalty notice relates to the alleged wrongful disconnection of a customer for non-payment of electricity bills. AGL allegedly breached the rules by arranging disconnection of the customer even though AGL had received $636.64 to credit the customer’s account from a Victorian Government Utility Relief Grant, which would have cleared the customer’s arrears. Under our rules, customers who are receiving payment assistance or are less than $300 in arrears are protected from being disconnected for not paying their energy bills.
The second penalty notice relates to the alleged failure by AGL to report the wrongful disconnection to the commission within the prescribed timeframe under our reporting framework.
